How to Save FamilyAlbum Photos and Turn Them Into a Puzzle

A photo shared in FamilyAlbum can be more than something to scroll past. Pick one memory, save it to your device, and turn it into a simple puzzle to enjoy with your child. Here is the official download route and a gentle first play session on iPhone or iPad.

Open one photo in your FamilyAlbum album and choose Download from its top-right menu. Check that it is in Photos on your iPhone or iPad, then select it in PhotoPuzzle. You do not need to export your whole album to try this activity.

Ask the family member who shared the photo before saving or redistributing it beyond the album. Saving a local copy for play and posting that copy elsewhere are different decisions. Open the saved image in Photos before your child is ready to play to avoid a last-minute search.

This guide focuses on the handoff from a shared album to a photo on your device. For every PhotoPuzzle control, see our how-to-play guide. For other ways to turn photos into puzzles, see our photo puzzle guide.

The short version: turn one shared photo into a play session

  1. 1. Pick one photo in FamilyAlbum
Open a familiar family picture and choose Download from the menu in the top-right corner.
  2. 2. Check the saved file
Look in Photos on iPhone or iPad. On Android, FamilyAlbum points to the Download folder.
  3. 3. Play on iPhone or iPad
Choose the saved photo in PhotoPuzzle and start with four pieces.

If FamilyAlbum and PhotoPuzzle are on different devices, first make sure the photo is available on the device you will use for play. As of September 30, 2026, PhotoPuzzle is available for iPhone and iPad; its Android version is coming soon.

How to download a photo from FamilyAlbum

FamilyAlbum’s official save instructions say to open the Album tab, tap the photo you want, open the menu in the top-right corner, then choose Download. Pick one photo before inviting your child over, so play can start without a long search through the album.

  • Choose a clear subject: a face, favorite toy or familiar place that your child can recognize at a glance.
  • Use an authorized album account: respect the album admin’s permissions and the family’s sharing choices.
  • Start with one: saving a single photo and bulk downloading an album are different features.

FamilyAlbum lists bulk downloading as a Premium Pro feature and says iOS can download up to 100 items in one batch. A single-photo activity does not require a bulk export. Check the current FamilyAlbum plan details before paying for a subscription.

Where to find your downloaded photo

Where to check for a photo downloaded from FamilyAlbum
DeviceFamilyAlbum’s suggested locationIf it is not obvious
iPhone or iPadPhotos appLook near the original date taken
AndroidDevice Download folderCheck a file manager or the folder in Google Photos

FamilyAlbum says the downloaded file usually keeps the date taken recorded in the album. A photo from last year may therefore appear near last year’s pictures instead of where you first looked for today’s download. If no date-taken information exists, the download date may be used. Android folder names vary by device.

Before opening PhotoPuzzle, make sure you can open the image in the device’s own photo app. If you are using another device or the original is only in cloud storage, check where that device actually has a usable copy. Do not delete the original or reinstall an app just because a photo is hard to find.

Make the saved photo a four-piece puzzle

On iPhone or iPad, PhotoPuzzle lets you choose a photo from the device. The route here is FamilyAlbum → photo saved on your device → PhotoPuzzle; it does not depend on any direct connection between the two apps.

  1. 1. Open Puzzle
Choose the flat piece-puzzle mode for the first round.
  2. 2. Choose your photo
Use the app’s photo button to open the device photo picker and select the photo you just saved.
  3. 3. Set four pieces
Start with the regular square-piece shape. Ask your child what they remember about the picture as you move the pieces together.

If the important part is cropped or tiny, try a differently framed photo. Our step-by-step PhotoPuzzle guide shows the button names, piece settings and what to check if an image does not load.

Three ways to play with the same photo

  • Tell the memory: before the puzzle, ask “Where were we?” or “Who was with us?” Let your child lead the story instead of turning it into a test.
  • Finish four pieces together: look for a familiar face, a bright shirt or a contrasting background. If it feels hard, place the first piece together.
  • Choose the next memory: when interest fades, invite your child to pick a different photo rather than raising the difficulty immediately. A picture with grandparents can start another conversation later.

There is no age at which every child must finish a particular number of pieces. For flexible choices, see our piece-count guide.

Respect album permissions and the extra copy on your device

FamilyAlbum says relatives can normally save photos, but an album admin can restrict downloads to admins only. If Download is unavailable, ask the admin about the album’s download permission. Do not try to work around a family member’s restriction.

Downloading creates a copy outside the shared album. Your device’s photo syncing, PhotoPuzzle’s access to selected photos and sharing a photo online are separate decisions. Review them in our kids’ photo privacy guide, and respect the family’s intended audience for each picture.

If PhotoPuzzle cannot see the image: check that it opens in your device’s Photos app, select it again in PhotoPuzzle, and review the app’s photo access. A photo visible only inside FamilyAlbum may not yet be available in the device picker.

Questions about FamilyAlbum downloads and photo puzzles

Do I have to pay to download one FamilyAlbum photo?

FamilyAlbum Help describes the regular method of opening one photo and choosing Download. Its bulk-download feature is described as a Premium Pro feature as of September 30, 2026. Check FamilyAlbum’s current help and plan details before subscribing.

Where is my downloaded photo on iPhone?

FamilyAlbum says downloaded photos can be found in the iPhone or iPad Photos app. The photo will usually keep its FamilyAlbum date taken, so check around that date as well as your recently added items. First confirm the download completed.

Where is the photo on Android?

FamilyAlbum points to the device’s Download folder; some devices also show it in a Google Photos folder. Folder names and views vary by device. PhotoPuzzle for Android is not released yet, so the puzzle steps in this article are for iPhone and iPad.

Can grandparents or other album members save photos?

Generally yes, but an album admin can restrict downloads to admins only. If Download is unavailable, ask an album admin to check the album’s download-permission setting rather than trying to bypass it.

Can I send a photo straight from FamilyAlbum to PhotoPuzzle?

This guide does not assume a direct integration. Download the photo to your device, confirm it opens in Photos, then select it from PhotoPuzzle’s photo picker on iPhone or iPad.

Will making a puzzle delete the original FamilyAlbum photo?

Choosing a photo in PhotoPuzzle or reshuffling the puzzle does not delete the original from the FamilyAlbum album. A download creates another copy on your device, however, so review your device’s photo syncing and sharing settings separately.

Start with one memory, not the whole album

Open and download one FamilyAlbum photo, check it on the device, then try it as a four-piece PhotoPuzzle game. A familiar picture can become a short conversation and a shared activity. Remember to check the album’s download permission and how the extra copy is handled on your phone.
